Updates from January, 2009

  • Blog Restructuring

I have a little problem with m blogs. The biggest one is that my main blog, the one you’re reading now, is broken.

I can’t install or update anything automatically, posting new entries doesn’t always work etc.

I tried switching the database but the issue seams to be more serious. Since I’m currently managing three different blogs with multiple topics I’m currently working on a concept to include all three blogs into a new single instance installation. But this will take a while.

In the mean time I was offered to write for the new IBM Blue Blog, so I’m using this opportunity to move all my future tech and business related post to this platform.

    What will happen here?

For the moment everything will stay as it is. I will keep posting non-tech/business related content here. Game related content will stay at Exx | Playing Games and cars and driving post can be found at Mirco fährt Auto.

Over the next few weeks I will work on the new concept. This will require a customized theme, which will hopefully be created by someone with more experience on writing WordPress themes. After everything is set I will do a clean WordPress installation to make sure no bugs are taken to the relaunched blog.

So it’s another months and for the second time in a row, a new worm threads all that use Windows computers. Well, actually only those who haven’t yet installed the security updates issued in December.

As soon as the news spread the usual Apple and Linux fanatics joined into the “Unsafe Windows” bandwagon. And in reality this has nothing to do with Windows as an operating system. it’s the lack of knowledge at the user base that enables the programmers of worms and viruses to exploit known security issues this easy.

Linux and Apple systems also need constant updates to fix security issues, but while the average Linux user is more educated and security conscious than the average Windows user. Apple systems still have not reached the mass market in great enough numbers to be of higher interest of Botnet owners and worm/virus programmers.

Early Wednesday, Helsinki, Finland-based security firm F-Secure Corp. estimated that 3.5 million PCs have been compromised by the "Downadup" worm, an increase of more than 1.1 million since Tuesday.

"[And] we still consider this to be a conservative estimate," said Sean Sullivan, a researcher at F-Secure, in an entry to the company’s Security Lab blog.

If your PC is one of these 3.5 million:

    HAHA!

Sorry, but if you don’t install security updates this is what WILL happen sooner or later. The outbreak in December was a “later” and this was a “sooner” exploit of known risks.

So, stop whining already and start patching your systems!

  • How To Lose Followers And Alienate Tweeple

It all started on a typical Friday evening with nothing to watch on TV. I turned to Twitter and noticed some strange posts with renamed movie titles tagged #movietwitter.

Since I’m a huge movie fan I opened a search panel for this tag and found that already some hundred people joined into this “event”.

    movietwitter - Tweet Racer

After a short while this tag showed up at the top of the trending topics on Twitter Search and continued to grow and it continued to rise to the top of Twitter Search and Twitscoop.

movietwitter - The Day The Tweets Stood Still

Since every participator was typing large volumes of bogus movie titles, some, more reasonable people got annoyed and started filtering, blocking and to unfollow people.

    movietwitter - Password Failwhale

Personally, filtering is the best option for such an occasion, since Twitter is all about following people with topics and interests similar to yours. But to unfollow people just because they have a good time with something you don’t want to accept is kind of childish.

    movietwitter - Last Man Following

The results of the way was that I lost about 4-5 followers and gained 3 new ones. One of the people unfollowing me joined up again on the next day and I still liked what we did on Friday.
